ABOUT THE LUMIERE SUMMIT
Why a Summit, Why Now?
The moving-image industries have weathered profound upheavals throughout their history. Yet rarely have so many disruptions occurred in such a short period of time. Over the past five years, the COVID-19 pandemic and the Hollywood strikes have coincided with far-reaching structural changes driven by shifting audience habits, technological transformation and new economic pressures, unsettling many of the assumptions on which the industry has long relied.
The challenges are considerable: the weakening of the theatrical model and the growing power of the attention economy; a new wave of consolidation across the industry; major changes in the public-policy and financing frameworks that sustain creation; and the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Together, these transformations are reshaping how works are created, financed, distributed, discovered and preserved. The moving-image industries are entering a pivotal period, comparable in significance to the birth of cinema 130 years ago.
The opportunities are equally significant, provided that these changes are addressed through a collective and genuinely global response, and that the value of creative works is understood both as an economic imperative for the future of the industry and as a cultural and democratic imperative for the future of our societies.
Co-chaired by Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, and Lee Jae-myung, President of the Republic of Korea, the Lumière Summit aims to serve as a global platform for action: a place where governments, companies, creators and cultural institutions can develop practical responses to the transformations reshaping the moving-image landscape, launch new initiatives and build lasting strategic alliances across countries and sectors. In doing so, the Summit aims to lay the foundations for a new multilateralism of the moving image, grounded in cooperation, cultural diversity and shared responsibility.
